Translator’s Preface: I have just found and translated
this article from a Chinese website dedicated to Chairman Mao. It reflects a
promising trend of young Chinese familiarizing themselves with the great
inheritance of Mao Zedong and his approach to social problems that have
re-emerged following the restoration of capitalism in the People’s Republic of
China. Any errors in the translation or the footnotes I have added are mine.

rare] Chairman Mao rushes onto Weibo's hot search list, and netizens cried as they
commented!

I really didn't expect that on the occasion of June 1 Children's Day, our @People's Daily Weibo posted a video about Chairman Mao himself assembling, at the time of the founding of New China, the top scholars to compile teaching materials.
This video, which quickly caught the attention of the general public, has already exceeded 300,000 likes.
And within a short time after it was published, it shot up on the Weibo hot search list!
This thing
is really too rare!
The previous editor of Weibo, hasn't he been working on this aspect all the time? What happened today?
Chairman Mao personally assembled the topics for the top scholars to compile into textbooks, and the reading has exceeded 160 million:
It is worthy of the attention of netizens that @人民日报 also used the three words "Chairman Mao"[1] openly this time instead of "Mao Zedong", let alone that there was the previous reference to Chairman Mao's great achievements in commemoration of the atomic bomb.[2]
Really, the situation is changing!
If you don’t believe me, please take a look at the comments of the majority of netizens. I did and cried:
I don't want Chairman Mao
To work so
hard
For the country and the people
When I saw this comment (part of the text above -Trans,) I was filled with tears and my heart was overwhelmed!
Someone said, "I am so happy to see that our young people are now promoting Chairman Mao, so happy!
Some people say that Chairman Mao is far-sighted, and the compilation of textbooks for elementary and middle schools is really important. "Thirty editors are too few, and it is not too much to increase it to 300." Only Chairman Mao has such a pattern. He is a truly great leader.
Some people say, please report more about Chairman Mao, who has always been ahead of his time and still is today, who has always guided us in the direction of socialist construction!
One
90-year-old said that it was really not easy for the country to work on the
atomic bomb under such difficult conditions during Chairman Mao's time. When I
was in Beijing last year, I was fortunate enough to visit the Chairman Mao
Memorial Hall to see the great man of the generation.
Some netizens shouted directly in their comments: Long live Chairman Mao![3] And it passed the Weibo editors and was sent out normally!
Chairman Mao said that the four greats[4] should not be used: that he only accepted one – “teacher”. Chairman Mao is the greatest teacher of all the Chinese people, and his ideas are always worthy of our study and practice!
Some people say that the more I learn about Chairman Mao, the more I am in awe of him, and the more I learn, the more I can understand why he became the inspiration of the people of his time. There is only one man who can swallow up the whole world and shine for ages - Mao Zedong!
Some young people said, "I've been reading Mao's Works recently, and Chairman Mao is really good. He said that young people should be bouncing around, that they should be allowed to sleep more and have more fun, and he also said that the curriculum is too much and too heavy, and that using the same methods to test students as those that were used against the enemy is really killing them!
Some people say that after seeing the previous events in Hong Kong, they can feel the importance of teaching materials even more! However, Chairman Mao himself was the leader of the textbook compilation, and today Wang Xuming, who deleted the textbook "Who are the loveliest people?"[5], has done a very serious thing. (This is referred to in the screenshot below – Trans.)
There is also the poison textbook in Xinjiang that has been used for 13 years. We must clean up their poison. We must pay more attention to the compilation of the textbook, and we must not let the ghosts sneak back in again!
Chairman Mao has always attached great importance to education. During his time in Jinggangshan, he set up a large number of "Lenin Primary Schools". After the founding of New China, Chairman Mao attached great importance to the work of cultivating revolutionary successors.
On
September 10, 1949, Chairman Mao wrote an inscription for the inaugural issue
of "China Children" magazine: Study hard! (See Mao’s calligraphic
inscription below – Trans.)
In 1951, "June 1" Children's Day, Chairman Mao said when he met with representatives of the young pioneers of Bayi (August 1st) School, you must be modest and prudent, not arrogant or impetuous, and be the next generation of the revolution!
Chairman Mao said to the teachers and
students in Shaoshan: "We must study hard and strive to be three-good students.”[6]
This photo reflects Chairman Mao's extremely expectation for the next generation of the motherland: "Thousands of red hearts are facing Beijing, and thousands of smiling faces are facing the red sun"![7]
On November 17, 1957, Chairman Mao
delivered a far-reaching speech to overseas students in Moscow: “The world is yours, as well as
ours, but in the last analysis, it is yours… Our hope is placed on you… The
world belongs to you. China's future belongs to you,” inspiring
generations of young people to courageously go ahead!
In particular, in response to imperialism
pinning its hopes for peaceful evolution
on the third and fourth generations of Chinese people, Chairman Mao demanded
that "education must serve proletarian politics and must be integrated
with productive labour" and that educated workers with socialist
consciousness should be trained!
In the famous "May 7th" instruction, Chairman Mao emphasized that students should focus on learning, while learning different things. They should study literature, work, agriculture, and military, as well as criticize the bourgeoisie. The school system needs to be shortened, education needs to be revolutionized, and the phenomenon of bourgeois intellectuals ruling our schools can no longer continue!
Chairman
Mao once wrote in a letter (above) to Premier Zhou: All private schools should
be taken over, expensive and elite schools should be abolished, and the
children of the people should be united.
This is
the record on page 564 of "The Chronicle of Mao Zedong* Volume One":
Today, when we look at the public schools that have
blossomed everywhere, and when we look at the various kinds of chaos in these
public schools such as high fees, child abuse and sexual abuse, do we not want
to recall those instructions of Chairman Mao?
It's
certainly a good thing that Chairman Mao's exploits have stormed onto Weibo,
but let's not be blindly optimistic!
In Baidu, when we search for content about Chairman Mao, we are still subject to many restrictions:[8]
On Douyin,
we still can't show Chairman Mao’s name when we make comments!
A complete
change in this situation requires our continued efforts!
However, the
people's love for Chairman Mao, and especially the awakening of those young
people of the post-90s and post-00s who have read the Works of Mao, has become
a historical trend that no one can stop!
Long live
Chairman Mao!
Chairman
Mao will always live in the hearts of the people!
Chairman
Mao will always be the red sun in our hearts!

[1] Written in Chinese
with three characters.
[2] China’s first atomic
bomb was tested on October 16, 1964.
[3] See in particular the
third comment from the bottom above where the phrase is repeated 15 times.
[4] During the Cultural
Revolution, it was standard practice to refer to Chairman Mao as the “Great
leader, great teacher, great commander-in-chief and great helmsman”.
[5] "Who
are the Loveliest People" is a reportage written by the writer Wei Wei
after his return from the battlefield in Korea, first published in the People's
Daily on 11 April 1951. It was later selected for a secondary school language
textbook and has influenced generations of Chinese people. Since then, the
volunteers have been widely and affectionately known as "the loveliest
people", but the article was later removed from the middle school language
textbook for nearly 20 years on the grounds that it was "out of
place".
Since
the first semester of 2021, the new textbook of the Ministry of Education has
reintroduced the article "Who are the Loveliest People" in the
textbook of the second volume of Grade 7 (as Lesson 7), with slight changes.
[6] “Three-Good Students” was a title of honour given to outstanding
students in Chinese schools, and referred to good moral character, good study
habits and good health. Since 1954, the "Three-Good Students" award
applied to all schools in China, with a fixed percentage of students and
basically the same criteria being used. In March 2012, in response to a
proposal by a number of CPPCC members to stop the selection of "Three-Good
Students", a spokesperson for the Ministry of Education that the Ministry
of Education no longer had uniform rules for the selection of "three-good
students" and would not interfere with decisions made by schools on this
matter.

songs” popular during the Cultural Revolution.

that a search for “Chairman Mao on education” on Baidu found no results.
